Basic bookkeeping using the WYCAS Cashbook

We will guide you through using the in-house WYCAS cashbook (available for free download), developed over many years, to provide a simple, effective system for small charitable organisations and social enterprises.

This session will introduce how to:

  • Set up the spreadsheet
  • Enter transactions, with categories for income and expenditure, restricted funds, and bank and cash accounts
  • Reconcile the bank balance to bank statements
  • Produce finance reports for in-year reporting

What will you learn?

Increase Confidence: Participants learn to track and reconcile finances accurately, giving them confidence in their financial data.

Build Capacity: The free WYCAS cashbook tool makes financial management simpler, helping small groups stay organised and efficient.

Improve Capability: Gaining skills in producing finance reports and reconciling accounts enhances decision making and financial oversight.

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for anybody who is involved in, or has an interest in, the day to day recording of their organisation’s finances, (paid worker, volunteer, trustee etc)

Please make sure that you have:

  • Access to a computer with Excel software
  • Basic ability to use a spreadsheet

Please note this training is aimed at voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations and groups based in North Yorkshire or delivering services within North Yorkshire.

About the trainer

Katy Sargeant – Community Accountant   

Katy Sargeant has been delivering cashbook training for the past year, bringing a wealth of experience from her diverse accounting background. After qualifying as a chartered accountant with ICAEW, Katy worked in management accounting at prestigious institutions like Imperial College and the University of Leeds. Since joining WYCAS in 2022, she’s applied her strong technical expertise to help community organisations with their financial management. Katy’s unique blend of skills ensures her cashbook training is both practical and engaging, empowering participants to gain confidence in managing their finances.

Concessionary places 

Thanks to funding from North Yorkshire Council, we have free ‘first come, first served’ places if you meet either of the criteria below. You can self-select a free place during booking.

Criteria: 

You are from a North Yorkshire VCSE organisation with an income of up to £5k

OR

You are from a North Yorkshire VCSE organisation with an income of up to £25k that is experiencing financial hardship and would struggle to pay.

These spaces are limited so if a free place is not shown when you go to book, you can ask to be added to the waiting list for a free place on a future training session.

No shows and concessions 

Please note that if you don’t attend training that you have booked on without giving seven days notice, you will be required to make the full payment. This also applies to free places. This is to allow as many participants as possible access to our training. See our  Terms and Conditions  for more information.

Refunds

Attendees can receive refunds for cancellations up to 7 days before the event date.
